Despite his recent suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy, Mark Ingram is still allowed to participate in offseason activities with the New Orleans Saints. The Heisman winner from Alabama won’t be suiting up with the Saints this month, however.
New Orleans coach Sean Payton confirmed Thursday that Ingram will not take part in OTAs (organized team activities), which are scheduled for May 22-24, May 29-31 and June 4-7.
“He and I spoke, so it wasn’t a surprise to us that he’s not here,” Payton told ESPN’s Mike Triplett. “I don’t agree with it. But it is optional, and that’s his choice.”
While OTAs are voluntary, Ingram will be expected to take part in mandatory veteran minicamp, which is scheduled for June 12-14.
Ingram is coming off his most productive season yet in New Orleans and second Pro Bowl appearance. He logged 230 carries for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns, all career highs. His OTA absence is reportedly linked to negotiations related to his contract. Ingram is in the final season of his current deal with the team.
