Maybe there’s a reason — other than excellent coaching and recruiting — that Alabama and LSU have been the best teams in the SEC West — and arguably the entire conference — since Nick Saban took over the Crimson Tide in 2007.
Each team has three assistants on its staff with FBS head-coaching experience. Meanwhile, six SEC teams — Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt — don’t have any assistants with that type of experience.
Here’s a list of SEC teams with former FBS head coaches on their staffs:
Alabama
Lane Kiffin: The Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator’s head coaching stops include the Oakland Raiders, Southern California and Tennessee.
Mario Cristobal: Bama’s offensive line coach was Florida International’s head coach from 2007-12.
Bobby Williams: The Tide’s special teams coordinator and tight ends coach was Michigan State’s head coach from 1999-2002.
Arkansas
Dan Enos: The Razorbacks’ offensive coordinator served as the head coach at Central Michigan from 2010-2014.
Florida
Randy Shannon: The Gators’ associate head coach/co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach was the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes from 2007-10.
Georgia
Jim Chaney: The Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach won his only game as Tennessee’s interim head coach in 2012.
LSU
Cam Cameron: The Tigers’ offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach was the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 1997-2001.
Ed Orgeron: The Tigers’ defensive line coach was head coach at Ole Miss from 2005-2007 and USC’s interim head coach in 2013.
Steve Kragthorpe: The Tigers’ special assistant to head coach Les Miles/chief of staff was Tulsa’s head coach from 2003-06 and Louisville’s head man from 2007-09.
South Carolina
Shawn Elliott: The Gamecocks’ offensive line coach served as the team’s interim coach for six games in 2015.
Tennessee
Mike DeBord: The Volunteers’ offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach was the head coach at Central Michigan from 2000-2003.
Larry Scott: The Volunteers’ tight ends coach was the Miami Hurricanes’ interim head coach for six games in 2015.
Texas A&M
Dave Christensen: The Aggies’ offensive line coach and run-game coordinator was the head coach at Wyoming from 2009-13.
