DJ Lagway took over last year when Graham Mertz went down with an injury and went 6-1 as Florida’s starter and helped them win big games against Ole Miss and LSU. He finished the season off by winning the Gasparilla Bowl MVP honors in a 33-8 win over Tulane.
As a relatively inexperienced quarterback, Lagway jumped out to many last season. In a new ESPN feature released on Wednesday, Adam Rittenberg talked with coaches and others around the sport of college football to gain some insight on some of the more notable quarterbacks. It seems the consensus on Lagway is that he is an elite talent and has the ability to be a great quarterback.
Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby said this about Lagway:
With DJ, it’s being able to keep things alive, arm strength, arm angles, all the off-platform things that he can do. DJ’s just a great talent.
Most highlighted Lagway’s ability to complete throws while not being perfectly balanced,
He’ll throw off the weirdest platforms,” an SEC coach said. “His feet won’t be in the ground, and the guy still throws at 60 yards. Like, what the f—? It shouldn’t be humanly possible.
Lagway will get his first action of the season this Saturday, Aug. 30, when he and Florida take on Long Island University at 7 p.m. ET.
