Though the SEC has begun adapting to modern offensive philosophies, defense is still the conference’s calling card.

That much is evident from Pro Football Focus’ list of the best college player at every position through Week 5, which featured an SEC representative at four of the five defensive positions.

Kentucky’s Josh Allen got the nod as the nation’s best edge defender so far thanks to his top-ranked pass-rush productivity score. PFF also recognized Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker, who’s allowing a passer rating of just 29.0 on throws his way, as the leader at his position.

Unsurprisingly, two Alabama players appeared on the list — Quinnen Williams (defensive interior) and Deionte Thompson (safety). The only defensive position not claimed by the SEC was linebacker, which went to Kansas’ Joe Dineen.

The league didn’t have an offensive player appear on the list, which is a little odd considering Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been the Heisman frontrunner for virtually the entire season.
