SEC WEEK 3 NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN
- Preston Smith, Mississippi State (2 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 2 TFL vs. South Alabama) — If the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year award was a first month honor, Smith’s deserving. He’s been unblockable in the early going despite not being the first name mentioned in reference to the Bulldogs defense.
- Myles Garrett, Texas A&M (2.5 sacks, 3.5 TFL vs. Rice) — This true freshman, who has 5.5 sacks over his first three games, is now 2.5 sacks away from tying Jadeveon Clowney’s rookie record in the SEC.
- Shane Ray + Vincent Lucas, Mizzou (10 tackles, 6.0 TFL, 4 sacks vs. UCF) — There isn’t a defensive line in the SEC playing at a higher level than Mizzou’s front four this season, a sack-happy group that has dominated at the point of attack. The scariest part? Markus Golden isn’t even mentioned this week despite five tackles and another 1.5 sacks.
LINEBACKERS
- Ramik Wilson, Georgia (13 tackles, 2.5 TFL vs. South Carolina) — The Bulldogs didn’t get the win, but No. 51 was all over the rain-soaked field at Williams-Brice Stadium chasing after running backs Mike Davis and Brandon Wilds.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
- Senquez Golson (2 tackles, 2 INT vs. Louisiana Lafayette) — This ballhawking senior picked off two passes for the Rebels and returned one 59 yards for a touchdown during the third quarter of a 56-15 victory.
- Landon Collins, Alabama (12 tackles vs. Southern Miss) — Alabama’s leading tackler picked up some of the slack in the secondary after Nick Perry was ejected for targeting in the third quarter. It was the first time Collins has ever reached double-digit stops in a single game.
