With a rating of 96.3, the SEC leads ESPN’s initial conference power rankings for the 2015 season.
The league boasts a record-setting 10 teams in the Week 2 AP Top 25 and combined to win 12 out of 13 games during opening weekend, including two victories over nationally-ranked opponents.
According to ESPN, “accounting for the level of competition faced and game site, the SEC was the only Power 5 conference that won more games than expected, based on FPI’s pregame projections.”
The FPI, of course, is ESPN’s Football Power Index which is designed to measure team strength and accurately project a squad’s performance the rest of the season.
Ohio State was outstanding, but the Big Ten as a unit lost some of its offseason momentum after a mediocre 7-5 showing in Week 1. Among the losses: Michigan at Utah in Jim Harbaugh’s debut, Nebraska’s Hail Mary defeat to BYU and Penn State’s dreadful outing at Temple.
