It’s no coincidence that the SEC’s clear top three teams also happen to possess three of the best defenses in the country.
Alabama has the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense, allowing just 8.6 points per game. Georgia is close behind at No. 2 in the country, allowing an average of 9.2 points per game.
Both Alabama and Georgia have allowed just three points apiece against SEC competition the last two weeks. The Tide shut out Vanderbilt 59-0 last week and pummeled Ole Miss 66-3 on Saturday. Georgia beat Mississippi State 31-3 a week ago and followed that up with a 41-0 beating of Tennessee on Saturday.
Auburn currently possesses the nation’s No. 6 scoring defense. The Tigers are giving up 11 points per game on average.

The old adage goes that defense wins championships. If any team in the SEC is capable of winning one, that will likely be the reason.
The Tide, ‘Dawgs and Tigers all rank in the Top 10 nationwide in total defense, as well.
