SEC Network analysts believe Danny Etling is the right choice for LSU’s complex offense

When LSU’s new offensive coordinator Matt Canada was hired away from Pittsburgh, he brought with him a complex offense that requires a lot of mental processing. Those requirements mean that senior quarterback Danny Etling, who has 22 career starts during his time LSU and Purdue — is the best man for the starting job. At least, that’s the belief at the moment.
Earlier today, the SEC Network had two of their analysts, former Vanderbilt quarterback Jordan Rodgers and former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik, on to talk about LSU’s quarterback situation.
“They went with the man who can run the offense most efficiently at this time, which is how Canada’s offense is designed and implemented,” Rodgers said during the segment.
The key phrase in his statement was when he said “at this time,” meaning that if Etling struggles to give the offense a balanced attack that they’ve lacked the last several years, then the keys could be handed to true freshman 4- star Myles Brennan.
Chizik added, “I don’t think this caught anyone by surprise. Hey, you’re always going to err to experience. This is a fifth-year guy, he’s seen a lot of football. One thing I think Canada can do for him is that I think he can speed up his decision-making. I watched a lot of film on him last year, and I thought he was a little slow making decisions. Usually when you make quicker decisions, your accuracy improves as well.”
If Etling can improve his downfield passing to open things up more for the run game, this LSU offense could end up being pretty scary.
