Here’s a look at some eye-popping stats and historical context entering Week 10 for select games. This week, we focus on the four matchups involving ranked SEC teams.
No. 4 LSU at No. 7 Alabama
Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Co. are in Tuscaloosa for the huge showdown between LSU and Alabama. The Tide has made 26 appearances on ESPN’s “College GameDay” than any school in the nation since 2007, which was Nick Saban’s first season in Tuscaloosa. That’s five more than the school with the next-most, which is Oregon. Please note that this list includes bowl games.
SCHOOL | GAMEDAY APPEARANCES | LAST |
---|---|---|
1. Alabama | 26 | Today |
2. Oregon | 21 | Sept. 12, 2015 |
3. LSU | 17 | Today |
4. Ohio State | 14 | Jan. 12, 2015 |
T5. Oklahoma | 12 | Oct. 27, 2012 |
T5. Florida | 12 | Jan. 2, 2013 |
Alabama faces LSU RB Leonard Fournette, who’s the frontrunner for this year’s Heisman. If any team can slow down the freight train, it’s the Tide, which is 3rd in the FBS in rush defense with 78.5 yards allowed per game. Alabama has only allowed 16 individual 100-yard rushing efforts over the last 10 years, by far the fewest of any school.
SCHOOL | 100-YD RUSHING GAMES ALLOWED | LAST | YARD ALLOWED |
---|---|---|---|
1. Alabama | 16 | Nick Chubb, 2015 | 146 |
2. Boston College | 22 | Travon McMillian, 2015 | 105 |
3. Ohio State | 25 | Saquon Barkley, 2015 | 194 |
4. Boise State | 30 | Donnel Pumphrey, 2014 | 147 |
5. Penn State | 39 | Perry Hills, 2015 | 124 |
LSU’s fortunes have changed in a bad way against Alabama coming off a bye week. Under Les Miles, the Tigers had won their first three games against the Tide, but now they’ve lost each of the last three coming off a break.
SEASON | SITE | RESULT |
---|---|---|
2007 | Away | Won 41-34 |
2010 | Home | Won 24-21 |
2011 | Away | Won 9-6 (OT) |

2014 | Home | Lost 20-13 (OT) |
Vanderbilt at No. 11 Florida
Florida true freshman WR Antonio Callaway has emerged as the team’s top playmaker. Callaway is one of just three SEC true freshmen wide receivers over the last five seasons (since 2011) with three 100-yard receiving games. Here’s the list:
SEASON | PLAYER | 100-YARD RECEIVING GAMES |
---|---|---|
2012 | Amari Cooper, ALA | 5 |
2015 | Antonio Callaway, UF | 3 |
2015 | Christian Kirk, TAMU | 3 |
As if it hasn’t already this season, Homecoming looks like a prime opportunity for Florida to feast in the turnover department. The Gators lead all Power 5 schools in turnover margin (+13), while the Commodores are tied for the second-to-last mark among Power 5 teams (-11).
Here’s a look at the teams thriving in turnovers:
SCHOOL | TURNOVER MARGIN | TOTAL GAINED | TOTAL LOST |
---|---|---|---|
1. Florida | +13 | 19 | 6 |
2. Baylor | +11 | 21 | 10 |
T3. Iowa | +10 | 19 | 9 |
T3. USC | +10 | 17 | 7 |
T3. Miami (FL) | +10 | 17 | 7 |
T3. Michigan State | +10 | 14 | 4 |
And here’s a look at the teams that aren’t:
SCHOOL | TURNOVER MARGIN | TOTAL GAINED | TOTAL LOST |
---|---|---|---|
1. Maryland | -16 | 12 | 28 |
T2. Vanderbilt | -11 | 10 | 21 |
T2. Wake Forest | -11 | 7 | 18 |
Arkansas at No. 19 Ole Miss
This nugget might blow your mind. Alex Collins only needs 40 rushing yards to become just the 3rd SEC player rush for 1,000 yards in a freshman, sophomore and junior campaigns. The only other two players to accomplish that? Herschel Walker and fellow Razorback Darren McFadden.
PLAYER | SCHOOL | 1,000-YARD SEASONS | TOTAL RUSHING YARDS |
---|---|---|---|
Alex Collins (needs 40 yards) | Arkansas | 2013-15 | 3,086 |
Darren McFadden | Arkansas | 2005-07 | 4,590 |
Herschel Walker | Georgia | 1980-82 | 5,259 |
While Collins has been getting it done on the ground, Ole Miss has been getting it done through the air. Consider this fact for a second: Three of the nine 400-yard passing games in Ole Miss history have occurred in three of the team’s last four games … yeah.
Of course, one of the big reasons for that is WR Laquon Treadwell, who continues to inch closer to two notable school marks: career receptions and career 100-yard receiving games. He’s only 18 catches away from surpassing Chris Collins for the Rebels’ all-time receptions mark, and one would figure he’ll pass that by the end of the season.
PLAYER | RECEPTIONS | SEASONS |
---|---|---|
1. Chris Collins | 198 | 2000-03 |
2. Laquon Treadwell | 181 | 2013-present |
3. Shay Hodge | 173 | 2006-09 |
He’s also had eight 100-yard receiving games. He can tie Donte Moncrief for 2nd-most in school history today. He needs four more to set a new school mark.
PLAYER | 100-YARD GAMES | SEASONS |
---|---|---|
1. Chris Collins | 11 | 2000-03 |
2. Donte Moncrief | 9 | 2011-13 |
3. Laquon Treadwell | 8 | 2013-present |
Auburn at No. 25 Texas A&M
Aggies quarterback Kyler Murray passed for 223 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 156 yards and a touchdown against South Carolina last week, and that was the first start of his career. That was just the seventh instance in which an SEC player passed for at least 200 with a TD and rushed for 150 and a TD since the turn of the century. Coincidentally, three of these seven performances came against the Gamecocks, including the last two.
Here’s a look at each of those seven performances:
SEASON | PLAYER | OPPONENT | TOTAL YARDS | TOTAL TDS |
---|---|---|---|---|
2015 | Kyler Murray, TAMU | South Carolina | 379 | 2 |
2014 | Josh Dobbs, TENN | South Carolina | 467 | 5 |
2013 | Johnny Manziel, TAMU | Oklahoma | 516 | 4 |
2012 | Johnny Manziel, TAMU | Louisiana Tech | 576 | 6 |
2007 | Tim Tebow, UF | Ole Miss | 427 | 4 |
2006 | Chris Nickson, VAN | Duke | 400 | 5 |
2001 | Tyler Watts, ALA | South Carolina | 393 | 3 |
