SEC out-recruiting every Power 5 league head-to-head, Big Ten not so much
The Big Ten has some work to do against its main competitors on the recruiting trail.
A story from CBS Sports’ Jon Solomon put some details behind the recent suspicions that the Big Ten has struggled on the recruiting trail due to declining populations in the Midwest.
As Solomon pointed out, the Big Ten performed the worst against other Power 5 conferences when two of those conferences pursued a player in recruiting from 2007-14.
Those results came from a study filed in an active lawsuit against the NCAA in connection to an old rule prohibiting multi-year scholarships. The research, conducted by economist Daniel Rascher, is to go against NCAA expert Lauren Stiroh’s claim that “different regions of the country are distinct recruiting markets.”
The SEC was victorious versus every conference head-to-head. The SEC outperformed the Big 12 (57 percent), ACC (58 percent) and Pac-12 (60 percent) in battles to lure recruits.
The Big Ten was the only conference to not own a winning record against one of the other four Power 5 conferences.
