SEC Pride: What fans have to brag about after Week 12

SEC fans are a prideful bunch. From historically great programs to wonderful fan traditions to the conference’s recent dominance over the college football landscape, there’s plenty to chant “S-E-C!” about. Here’s a look at five things the conference’s fans can point to after week 6 of the regular season.

  1. The new best team in the country? Mississippi State had a five-week run at the top of the nation, but after falling to Alabama the Crimson Tide look like they’re the new favorite to win the national championship. The Tide bruised and battered Dak Prescott and the Bulldogs, jumping to No. 2 in both polls on Sunday. Now, we wait to see where Alabama will sit in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday.
  2. Missouri’s East enchantment. Somehow, someway, the Missouri Tigers seem to have the SEC East under a spell. For the second straight year, the division’s newest addition has paved its own road to Atlanta, needing only to win its final two games for a second straight East title. No matter how bad they look — and some of the offensive efforts have been brutal — the Tigers just keep finding a way to win.
  3. Programs on the rebound. After 17 straight losses, Arkansas clobbered LSU on Saturday, registering a 17-0 shutout. Meanwhile, in the East, Tennessee has gone from dysfunctional to the potential East favorite next year on the strength of quarterback Josh Dobbs. The SEC is a “what have you done for me lately” kind of league, and these two have fans smiling with their recent accomplishments.
  4. Inspiring stories. Everyone has heard about Dak Prescott’s rise to the top of college football, but backfield mate Josh Robinson’s story is just as inspiring. Michael Bonner of the Clarion-Ledger (Jackson, Miss.) wrote about Robinson’s rough path to Starkville, and it’s nothing short of amazing.
  5. Coaches with class. Will Muschamp has been maligned over the last two years, and on Sunday the Gators announced that he wouldn’t be returning next year. Instead of acting pridefully, Muschamp took as much of the blame as can be expected and thanked the University of Florida for the opportunity, while remaining head coach through the end of the season. Not only that, but South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier spoke from the heart while lamenting the end of Muschamp’s tenure immediately after the game, showing the support SEC coaches have for one another.
