SEC QB’s: Single-game, multiple-touchdown club in 2015

There are big games for quarterbacks – and then there are monster games.

The SEC saw plenty of monstrous games from signal-callers in 2015 as 14 different quarterbacks threw for at least three touchdowns in a single contest a total of 29 times.

Their leader was far and away Arkansas’ Brandon Allen, who followed up a six-touchdown effort against Ole Miss two weeks later by tying an SEC record with seven scoring throws versus Mississippi State.

How impressive was Allen’s outpouring of offense? The senior threw for more touchdowns (13) in two games against the state of Mississippi this year than the entire Auburn team threw all season combined (11). The Tigers were the only team in the conference not to have a quarterback throw for at least three touchdowns in at least one game this season.

Allen joined an elite fraternity with his seven-touchdown performance, placing his name in the record books alongside Erik Ainge (Tennessee) , Terry Dean and Doug Johnson (Florida) and Tim Couch (Kentucky). Couch did it twice.

Speaking of the Mississippi schools, the Rebels’ Chad Kelly and Dak Prescott of the Bulldogs led the conference with the most three-or-more touchdown performances with five apiece –including a pair of 4-touchdown games for each.

Defensively, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt were the only SEC teams not to allow opposing quarterbacks to throw for three-or-more touchdowns all season long. Ole Miss surrendered the most, giving up four multiple-touchdown games to opposing quarterbacks.

Odd fact: LSU gave up three-or-more touchdown games to quarterbacks named Mahomes (Patrick, Texas Tech) and Mahoney (Zack, Syracuse) this season. In fact, the Tigers secondary was on the receiving end of three of the seven contests in which out-of-conference signal-callers tossed at least three scoring throws.

Many of those opposing quarterbacks were big names, such as Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, Brandon Doughty of Western Kentucky and Heisman runner-up Deshaun Watson of Clemson.
