The SEC decided not to fine Alabama men’s basketball coach Nate Oats after he shoved Missouri’s Aidan Shaw during a skirmish Tuesday night in a game won by Alabama.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey released a statement about the issue as the league issued a public reprimand after it said Oats violated sportsmanship expectations.
“Nate Oats’ actions were unacceptable and violated the expectations for conduct and sportsmanship as established by the membership of the Southeastern Conference,” Sankey said in the statement. “Under no circumstances should a coach make intentional contact with a student-athlete on an opposing team.”

Alabama’s Aaron Estrada fouled Missouri’s Anthony Robinson II after a rebound with 7:34 left in the first half. The players were tangled, and Shaw stepped to Estrada as the play ended. Oats then got in the middle to separate them and that’s when he pushed Shaw in the direction of the Missouri bench.
After the game, Oats said he apologized to Missouri, while Missouri coach Dennis Gates said if a player did the same thing, it’d be an automatic technical foul.
