Shane Beamer sent a message Thursday as South Carolina is getting set to begin spring practice that the Gamecocks can’t assume how things will go in 2023 because of how 2022 finished.
Beamer noted that the Gamecocks have a lot of new faces. One of the newcomers, DeAngelo Gibbs, a transfer from Tennessee, has been described as an “OG” since he’s been around so long. Beamer called it a low risk, high reward situation, and Gibbs has a chance to show why he was highly recruited.
From a staff perspective, Beamer said one of his staff members turned down an offer from another SEC East team this week.
Beamer does not expect Tonka Hemingway or Cason Henry to participate in spring practice after both had surgical procedures recently, but nothing major. Jordan Strachan and Mo Kaba are also rehabbing well, but will be limited in spring, and the same goes for David Spaulding.
As the new offense is installed, Beamer was asked about Trey Knox describing the offense as up-tempo and fast, and he said, “That’s news to me.” Beamer said and added that it certainly would be at times, but it would fit the personnel.
The more important aspect to Beamer is limiting turnovers.
“Whatever it is, it needs to quit turning the ball over so frickin’ much,” Beamer said, and recalled that for 2 years in a row the Gamecocks have been last in turnovers. Beamer blames himself and said it’s always going to be addressed and emphasized.
