Shane Beamer surprised many around the SEC by leading South Carolina to a 7-6 record and a bowl victory in 2021, his first year at the helm of the program.
Now, he enters Year 2, and he and his team are facing the pressure to improve on that 7-win mark.
On Wednesday afternoon, Beamer joined “The Paul Finebaum Show” and said his players are working hard to not take a step back in a conference where everyone is invested in getting better:

“There’s a lot of energy and excitement about South Carolina football,” he said. “I’ve had so many people tell me they’ve never been so excited about Gamecock football. That’s humbling to hear them say, but as the coach, I see all the areas to improve. … It’s such a thin line between winning and losing. Yes, we won 7 and that could have easily been 9 and that easily could have been 5 in some ways. … Nobody in this conference is slowing down or going backwards by any stretch of the imagination.
“You certainly want to continue to embrace the confidence and excitement we have in the program right now, and the guys have. But it’s also understanding that we have a lot of work to do and not losing that chip on our shoulder.”
The Gamecocks’ spring game is this weekend. We’ll get our first look at QB Spencer Rattler and the new Gamecocks’ offense then.
