As Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks prepare for Texas A&M this weekend, the radar is on sophomore quarterback Max Johnson.

Johnson, a former starting quarterback at LSU, is “not a backup quarterback that’s playing for (Texas A&M),” said Beamer at his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Johnson has stepped in as the Aggies’ primary play-maker since with fellow QB Conner Weigman out for the season with a foot injury. Weigman suffered the injury a few weeks ago.

“(Johnson) came to College Station and showing what a capable quarterback he is now that he’s gotten the opportunity to start since the injury to the previous quarterback Conner (Weigman),” Beamer said.

Before Texas A&M’s bye week this past weekend, the team fell 20-13 to Tennessee. Johnson had 2 interceptions, but threw for 223 yards.

In 5 games, Johnson has thrown for 898 yards, 7 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.

“Really impressed with Max and his toughness sitting in the pocket, he’s taken some shots when he sits in there and takes the hit, delivers the throw,” Beamer said.

Beamer noted he has “a lot of respect” for Johnson and his family.

“I got to know his brother Jake and the family, we were recruiting him as a tight end at Oklahoma,” Beamer said. “I think the world of their family, and really impressed with Max and what he’s doing.”

The Aggies (4-3) and the Gamecocks (2-5) square off this Saturday at noon on ESPN.
