Shane Beamer responds to slow start in Tennessee loss, addresses controversial play calling

Shane Beamer said he understands that South Carolina must adjust to a fast-paced offense like Tennessee showed on Saturday because it won’t be the last time the Gamecocks see it.
The coach addressed the media after the 45-20 loss to the Vols, and added that he was proud with the way South Carolina bounced back later in the game.
Beamer was also asked about the play-calling, both early in this game, and throughout the season, and gave a spirited response. The Gamecocks had a promising drive early in the game that ended with an interception near the goal line.

Is there a mechanism to overturn a pre-determined playcall, in that situation?
Beamer: “The mechanism is me, as the head coach, to overrule the call when I hear it on the headphones. I liked the call.”

Shane Beamer on The Play: Had it in all week. Had talked about it that they were going to put it in the first time they were inside the 5.
He mentions that, in hindsight, should have just kept running. Burch also had the option to run, but the throw was the design.

“Good.”

Beamer said the fake punt call was something South Carolina saw schematically with Tennessee earlier in the week and it came again today.

“That was a play we’ve been working on all week…We had talked about it as a staff, first time we got down there we wanted to get to that call.”
