Shane Beamer says winning bowl game may be worth mayo bath

South Carolina hadn’t clinched a bowl game appearance since the Belk Bowl in 2018.

That changed on Sunday as the Gamecocks learned they’d be playing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte against North Carolina on Dec. 30. Duke’s Mayo has sponsored the game since 2020, taking over for Charlotte-based Belk.

And there’s an incentive for the winning team: the bowl will donate $10,000 to the school’s charity of choice “if Duke’s Mayo is dumped” following the contest, according to bowl chairman Danny Morrison.

“I’m not a big mayo guy but I’ll take one for the team,” Beamer said on Sunday. “If it means we won a football game and get a seventh win, I’ll do whatever I need to do.”

Considering the way things have gone for the Gamecocks in recent years, that’s certainly well worth Beamer changing his stance on mayonnaise. South Carolina was 4-8 and 2-8 in the 2 previous seasons before his arrival and haven’t won 7 games since the 2018 season. Its last bowl win was the Outback Bowl against Michigan in 2017.
