Luke Doty is just one of the names South Carolina fans will be focused on as the Gamecocks’ season opener against Eastern Illinois on Sep. 4. The statuses of both running back Kevin Harris (back) and cornerback Cam Smith (foot) remains up in the air.

During the latest episode of Carolina Calls on Thursday, head coach Shane Beamer was asked about the latest on all 3 players, stating that he expected them to be ready to go for the opener.

While optimistic, Beamer was cautiously so.

“Does that mean they will [play]? No,” he added.

The Gamecocks shouldn’t have much of an issue against an FCS opponent in Beamer’s first game back at Williams-Brice since serving as a South Carolina assistant between 2007-2010. But getting key players like Doty, Harris—a 1st-team All-SEC pick following last season—and Smith, who had a promising redshirt freshman campaign, is an obvious priority if the Gamecocks are to make headway in the SEC East in Beamer’s first year in charge.
