Zeb Noland will be taking the snaps for South Carolina as it opens its season—and the Shane Beamer era—against Eastern Illinois at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday.

The graduate assistant was called into action, of course, because of a foot injury suffered in practice by Luke Doty. While there were initial concerns about the severity of the injury, it appears that it won’t be as serious as once feared.

While Noland will be starting on Saturday, Beamer addressed the condition of Doty during his “Carolina Calls” radio show on Thursday. According to Beamer, while the sophomore is “doubtful” for the season opener, he “fully expects” the Myrtle Beach, S.C. native to be ready to play on Sept. 11 against East Carolina.

Doty played 8 games in 2020 as a true freshman, starting twice. He first replaced Collin Hill against Missouri before starting against Georgia and Kentucky, accumulating a total of 405 yards and 2 touchdowns on 43-of-71 passing last season.
