Christopher Darnell Jones, the man who shot and killed 3 Virginia football players in 2022, was sentenced to the maximum allowable penalty of 5 life sentences, plus 23 years on Friday.

Jones pleaded guilty to 3 counts of first-degree murder after opening fire on a charter bus on November 13, 2022. The shooting took the lives of Lavel Davis Jr, D’Sean Perry and Devin Chandler, while injuring Mike Hollins and UVA track athlete Marlee Morgan. Jones was also found guilty on 2 counts of aggravated malicious wounding and 5 counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Hollins, who testified at the hearing alongside Morgan, said the following after the sentencing was complete, via ESPN.

“Knowing that he has been given a time and justice has been served for the most part even though that no amount of time on this earth in jail will get those lives back, just a little bit of peace knowing the man that committed those crimes won’t be hurting anyone else,” said Hollins.

Hollins’ 2023 season, which immediately followed the tragedy, was an inspiration to many. The Virginia running back returned to the field for his senior year and now serves as a graduate assistant for the program.

He was named the recipient of the 2025 NCAA Inspiration award in January of this year.
