It didn’t take long for the 1st fight of the 2024 college football season to break out.
It happened in the 1st quarter of SMU’s Week 0 contest against Nevada on Saturday night.
After what appeared to be some initial trash talk, SMU’s Jordan Hudson struck a Nevada player on the side of the helmet with an open hand.
Hudson was then quickly shoved to the ground by another Nevada player in retaliation.
After officials conferred, offsetting personal foul penalties were assessed to players on both teams — but no one was ejected.

It’s just the first of what’s sure to be many times this season when emotions get out of control during a game. Thankfully in this case, it didn’t result in any serious consequences (at least in the short-term) for either team.
Nevada is proving to be a tough opponent for SMU. The Mustangs are playing in their first official game as a member of the ACC and entered this game as 27.5-point favorites over the Wolfpack.
However, SMU trailed 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. SMU is 3-3 all-time against Nevada.
