South Carolina commit pays up on bet with Tennessee pledge Jake Merklinger
South Carolina commit Michael Smith was seen walking around school decked out in Tennessee gear after he lost a bet with teammate and Vols’ commit Jake Merklinger.
Apparently the 2 bet that if Tennessee won the game, Smith would have to rock Tennessee gear to school. Obviously the Vols came out on top in a dominant 41-20 performance, and Smith kept his word on the bet.

The look was sure to turn heads at school, especially considering the 2 players live Georgia.
But Vols fans took the opportunity to urge Merklinger on social media to try and flip Smith’s commitment to Tennessee. While that is unlikely to happen, it was certainly another opportunity for Tennessee fans and Merklinger to gloat even more after the win.
Tennessee is getting a solid player in Merklinger. The 2024 quarterback is a 4-star composite according to 247Sports composite and is considered to be the No. 8 quarterback in his class and the No. 14 player in the state of Georgia.
And it probably helps his case for winning Tennessee fans over that he’s already taking shots at the Gamecocks.
