South Carolina governor: No state support available for Gamecocks’ game

Major college football games require a lot of cooperation between different groups.

However, on Saturday, if the South Carolina Gamecocks are able to host the Georgia Bulldogs, one of those groups won’t be available to help.

On Wednesday, South Carolina governor Nikki Haley said the state can’t offer any support for Saturday’s game because of Hurricane Matthew:

Haley continued, according to The State, saying, “I can’t take troopers off the road to go put them at a football game. If they do that, they would be working with the Richland County sheriff’s office to get that done.”

State support often includes security, a police presence, traffic control and more. Instead, that essential personnel will be helping the state with evacuations and other traffic concerns.

Richland County sheriff Leon Lott said his staff would provide security for the game if it is played, according to the article:

“There won’t be any lack of security at the game whenever it’s held,” Lott said.

As of now, Saturday’s game between the Gamecocks and Bulldogs is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.
