South Carolina hires Auburn’s interim DC as D-line coach after superb performance
Lance Thompson quickly capitalized on his performance as an interim defensive coordinator at Auburn to land a job at South Carolina.
Thompson has taken a job on Will Muschamp’s staff as a defensive line coach. Thompson revealed the news on social media less than 24 hours after helping Auburn to a 31-10 win over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl.
Thompson has plenty of experience working with Muschamp. The two worked together when they were assistant coaches at LSU in 2002-2003 before working together this past season at Auburn.
Now, he’ll be working with Muschamp again in Columbus.
“I’m excited to have coach Thompson join our staff,” Muschamp said in a news release. “He did a great job calling the Auburn defense in their bowl win over Memphis. He has coached multiple positions throughout his career and has a great understanding of our defensive system. He will be an outstanding addition to our staff.”
Thompson is widely regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country.
Thompson’s unit held Memphis to just 3 offensive points after entering the game averaging 42.7 points per game. And Memphis finished the game with just 205 total yards after coming in with 510.4 per game.
