South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer told reporters Tuesday afternoon that left tackle Josiah Thompson will “most likely” miss the entire 2026 season.

Thompson originally entered the transfer portal at the end of the season but made the decision to return to Columbia. However, he will now require surgery. Beamer noted that Thompson played through a lower-body injury last year and that it needed to be addressed for him to play his best football.

“I don’t anticipate Josiah being able to play this upcoming season,” Beamer said on Tuesday. “His injury is an injury that really goes back to a couple of years ago, a lower-body issue that he’s been dealing with that we knew a couple of years ago that surgery was the most likely end result for him. He kind of played through it last season, but in order for him to be at his best as a football player beyond college, it’s one of those things that kind of needed to happen at some point.”

This is not the first injury issue that has struck the South Carolina offensive line this offseason. We’re not even to April and the Gamecocks are expected to be without Thompson and Jacarrius Peak for spring practices. Peak, who suffered a lower-body injury while playing basketball, should be good to go for the 2026 season. Beamer also mentioned that Jake Recker would be out for Spring practice on Tuesday.
