After a full season on the gridiron, Brandon McIlwain may be heading back to the diamond.
The South Carolina true freshman is reportedly considering playing baseball this spring, which he did last year as an early enrollee. McIlwain will reportedly spend more time with the baseball team if he’s contributing, but he’ll be fully involved in spring football practice if that’s not the case.
“He’s preparing to be with us. He’s excited about playing baseball here,” Gamecocks’ baseball coach Chad Holbrook told 247Sports. “I’ve had some conversations with Coach Muschamp as well. (Muschamp) is committed to allowing him to be part of the program as well.
“He needs to get over here in January once football is over and we’ll try to catch him up from the time he missed in the fall and see if he can get in the conversation to get in there and play.”
A former Perfect Game All-American and No. 16 high school prospect in the country, McIlwain hit 1-for-10 with an RBI in eight games last season.
The true freshman has played in seven football games this season, completing just 52.3 percent of his passes for 567 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to classmate Jake Bentley.
