South Carolina freshman QB Jake Bentley has been great for the Gamecocks through three starts this season.
The young starter has thrown for 622 yards and six touchdowns in wins over UMass, Tennessee and Mizzou and has yet to throw his first interception.
Bentley’s high school coach, Brian Blackmon of Opelika High School in Alabama, said he’s proud of his former star for what he’s accomplished so far:
“We speak once or twice a week,” Opelika coach Brian Blackmon, who is preparing his team for a Friday playoff game against Daphne (Ala.), told WNSP-FM 105.5 on Tuesday. “I’m really proud of him.”
Blackmon added that he is excited to see what the young quarterback can do this weekend in a tough road environment against Florida:
“My message to him was all three of his wins were at home,” he said. “Now, he has to go on road in The Swamp. So really he hasn’t done anything yet. I say that jokingly.
“I tell you what he has done, he’s energized the South Carolina fan base, if nothing else.”
Check out Bentley and the Gamecocks in action on Saturday at noon Eastern time on CBS.
