South Carolina is remembering a great and loyal fan affectionately known as “Gamecock Jesus,” who passed away after a battle with prostate cancer. He was 69.

Carlton Thompson was memorialized on social media by accounts throughout Gamecock Nation.

“Carlton Thompson, our beloved “Gamecock Jesus” has the best seat in the house tonight. He loved his Gamecocks. We loved him.”

David Cloninger of the Post and Courier noted that Thompson was famous because of his presence at USC athletic events, particularly basketball games.

“Always perched on the baseline at Colonial Life Arena — the one near the opposing bench, so he could try to distract shooters during second halves — he cut a distinctive profile with his hair, held in place by a USC bandanna, his garnet T-shirt reading “Believe” and a white flag adorned with USC’s Block C logo and dozens of autographs from players over the years.”
