South Carolina pitching coach Justin Parker has reportedly left for the same role at Mississippi State, and now the Gamecocks have identified a replacement for Parker.
TheBigSpur and Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball reported that the Gamecocks will hire Matt Williams from Liberty to be the Gamecocks’ next pitching coach.
Williams just finished his 4th year at Liberty and 18th year overall as pitching coach. Williams has seen 35 pitchers sign professional contracts while 5 of his former pitchers have gone on to make their Major League debuts and pitch in the majors. During his time as a pitching coach, he has had 4 pitchers go on to win Conference Pitcher of the Year and numerous others go on to win All-Conference honors.
Liberty finished this past season 27-31.
Williams will a homecoming of sorts, as he prepped at Lancaster High School (S.C.) before he went to Spartanburg Methodist College where he helped his sophomore class to 101 victories in two years and a trip to the NJCAA World Series.
With Justin Parker going to Mississippi State and @GamecockBasebll bringing in Matt Williams from Liberty, it’s one of those instances where both sides are pretty happy.
