South Carolina is expected to start Robby Ashford at quarterback on Saturday against Akron, according to a report.

That news was shared by 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz on Friday afternoon. Ashford would be starting in place of LaNorris Sellers, who suffered an ankle injury toward the end of the first half in South Carolina’s Week 3 loss to LSU.

Sellers briefly re-entered the game against LSU last week after hurting his ankle, but it was mostly Ashford who played quarterback for the Gamecocks in the second half of that game. Ashford completed 2-of-4 passes for 42 yards during his time on the field.

Earlier in the week, head coach Shane Beamer said Sellers has been making progress each day but said his status for Saturday was still uncertain.

While an injury to your starting quarterback is never ideal, the timing could certainly be worse for South Carolina in this case. Even with Ashford expected to get the nod, the Gamecocks are still 26.5-point favorites (via bet365) over Akron this weekend.

After this weekend, South Carolina is idle in Week 5 and then will welcome Ole Miss to Columbia on Oct. 5. That gives Sellers 2 weeks to rest before South Carolina has another tough SEC game the first weekend of October.

South Carolina and Akron will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
