Former South Carolina superstar and No. 1 overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney has been placed on season-ending injured reserve by the Houston Texans, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Texans’ coach Bill O’Brien made the news official during his media availability Thursday.

According to a report by NFL.com, Clowney met recently with famed arthroscopic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who determined he would need to undergo a second procedure for a right knee injury that has hampered his rookie season since a Week 1 win over Washington.

Clowney tore the meniscus in his right knee in the second quarter of the Week 1 victory, forcing him to spend an extended amount of time out of the lineup. He returned for Houston’s Week 8 showdown against Tennessee, and was in and out of the lineup from that point until it was determined this week he would undergo a second operation on the knee.

“That’s what needs to be done to try to get him healthy,” Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel told NFL.com. “… When he’s healthy, we know what he’s capable of.”
