South Carolina senior QB Perry Orth is locked in a battle with true freshmen Brandon McIlwain and Jake Bentley heading into the 2016 season.

Competing against two 18 year olds can’t be easy for the experienced senior, but Lorenzo Nunez, who received playing time at quarterback for the Gamecocks last year (but has been working at receiver this year), said Orth’s experience can’t be replaced:

“He’s like the dad, actually,” Nunez said. “He’s older than all of us. He’s like 23 now. He’s like a mentor for the whole team, actually. If we need help with anything, we come to him.”

One thing Orth has going for him is that he’s no stranger to competition:

“Every single year I’ve been here, I’ve been in a competition with somebody,” said Orth, a senior. “So it’s nothing new.”

It would be pretty surprising if Orth wasn’t named the week one starter for the Gamecocks, but he’ll have to stay healthy and have a good month of practice to win over new coach Will Muschamp.

The good news for Orth, though, is that he knows what he needs to do in order to win the job.
