No. 9 Texas fell at Florida in a 29-21 upset loss and a major reason was the lack of rushing attack. The Longhorns only mustered 52 yards on the ground for a paltry 2.0 yards per carry.
During his postgame press conference, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian lamented the inability to run the ball as a key focal point going forward.
“We have to figure that out…We couldn’t run it tonight when they didn’t know we were going to run it, regardless of when they knew we were going to run it. So we’ve got to improve that,” Sarkisian said. “We just cannot be a 1-dimensional team. When guys that just start rushing the passer and not worrying about the run, the game gets really difficult.”
Sarkisian added that Texas has to find more running success beyond quarterback Arch Manning, who had a 36-yard scamper on Saturday.
“We’ve got to find a way to generate some run game and generate some run game outside of Arch,” Sarkisian said. “We’ve got to find it with the runners and that’ll be a task of ours tonight, tomorrow, Monday to put together a plan for next week.”
Texas will have a large challenge to rush the ball next weekend against rival Oklahoma, who ranks third nationally in points allowed per game (9.0). Oklahoma vs. Texas is set for Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
