Mark Stoops has been hired by Steve Sarkisian and Texas as a special assistant to Sarkisian, according to a report from 247Sports’ Chip Brown. Stoops, who spent 13 years with Kentucky, was just let go after this past season.
According to Brown’s report, Stoops will serve a similar special assistant role like Gary Patterson and Paul Chryst when they were hired by Texas.
Stoops is Kentucky football’s all-time wins leader and has several decades of experience in college football, especially on the defensive end. Before taking the job as Kentucky’s head coach in 2013, Stoops worked as a defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator for both Arizona and Florida State. Stoops has also made stops with Miami, Houston, South Florida and Wyoming.
He’s had a roller-coaster of a past 24 months, too. Stoops was very nearly hired to coach Texas A&M before the Aggies decided to go with Mike Elko instead, then he put together one of his worst seasons at Kentucky as the Wildcats finished 5-7 and 2-6 in SEC play.
Now, he’s heading to Austin.
The Longhorns currently have a 25% chance to win the SEC next season, behind only Georgia in the odds per Kalshi. Here’s a look at other top competitors:
