Representatives for Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian issued a statement on Saturday calling reports that he would be interested in an NFL coaching job “patently false.”
Earlier Saturday morning, speculation quickly spread that Sarkisian could have an eye toward the NFL. The Athletic’s Diana Russini reported that representatives for Sarkisian let NFL decision-makers know the head coach “would be interested” in head coaching positions in the NFL, including the open Tennessee Titans job.
Horns247’s Chip Brown reported later that Sarkisian’s representatives had signaled to some in the NFL that Sarkisian would be interested in the Miami Dolphins job if it came open.
The chatter prompted a swift response from Sarkisian’s agents at CAA — Jimmy Sexton and Ed Marynowitz.
“Any reports regarding communications on coaching opportunities with NFL teams are patently false and wildly inaccurate,” the statement read. “Sark is solely focused on coaching the University of Texas football team.”
Sarkisian is in his fifth season with Texas. He holds a 43-19 record overall, with consecutive trips to the College Football Playoff semifinals.
He coached in the NFL in 2004 as the Oakland Raiders quarterback coach and then in 2017-18 as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
The Titans fired head coach Brian Callahan on Oct. 13. The future for Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel is very much in jeopardy, with the Dolphins sitting at 1-6 on the season, but no move has been made on that front yet.
Former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is currently the backup quarterback in Miami.
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
