Steve Sarkisian says Texas was ‘caught up in officiating’ late vs. Vanderbilt

Texas’s win over Vanderbilt featured some questionable officiating, especially so in the final quarter.

A few instances stand out. For starters, there was a 2-point conversion where the Vanderbilt receiver reached the ball towards the goal line, but it appeared just short. The call on the field was that the ball had broken the plane of the goal line, and because it was inconclusive, the play stood. A few questionable penalties, in Texas fans eyes, helped nudge Vanderbilt back into this one, too.

Not just fans, though. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian noted postgame that the officiating might have gotten too far into Texas’s head as Vanderbilt inched its way back into the game. Sarkisian did accept that, “there are some things there that we’re going to want to get answers to, which we’ll turn in and figure out why that occurred,” but was also quick to blame his team for Vanderbilt’s comeback attempt. control what you can control, right?

Sarkisian specifically pointed out Vanderbilt’ converted 4th and 19 from within their own 5 and a blown coverage that led to a wide-open Commodores touchdown. Here’s what he had to say regarding Vanderbilt’s comeback:

Of course, a win is a win for the Longhorns, no matter how it all went down at the end. The Longhorns just knocked off a top 10 team and remain alive for a spot in the College Football Playoff with their backs against the wall.

The job is not yet finished, though. Texas still has to face No. 5 Georgia and No. 3 Texas A&M before the regular season is up.
