The Florida Gators are looking for a new football coach, and Steve Spurrier spoke highly of one potential candidate this morning.

Spurrier has commented multiple times on the coaching search since the dismissal of Jim McElwain Sunday. He recently said that the Gators do not necessarily need an offensive coach despite their recent struggles. It is entirely possible that a defensive-minded coach with the right personnel turns out to be the best fit for Florida, but that’s obviously not what Florida fans want.

The Gators program was built on offense from Steve Spurrier to Urban Meyer. And even though McElwain was an offensive-minded coach, you’d never know it looking at the on-field product on Saturdays.

Spurrier was asked about UCF head coach Scott Frost this morning on radio. He gave a favorable review of what Frost has done with the Knights, and Spurrier did highlight UCF’s work on the offensive side of the ball.

Thomas Goldkamp with 247 Sports shared Spurrier’s comments that were made on the “Open Mike” radio program hosted by Mike Bianchi in Orlando, Florida:

“He’s done a super job,” Spurrier said, speaking to the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi on his “Open Mike” radio program. “What do they lead the nation in scoring? I tell you, that would make some Gators happy if we could score 40. Or 30. Thirty would be a highlight day.”

Regardless of the route that Florida takes with its next head coach, it is certainly clear that the offense needs to perform better moving forward.

It remains to be seen who Florida winds up hiring, but it is worth noting that Frost is the new betting favorite to lead the Gators.
