We’ve got a mix of good news and bad news from the Sun Belt on Thursday as the conference has announced its fall sports have been delayed.

That’s the bad news.

The good news? The upcoming Sun Belt football season has not been affected as the league announced that all fall sports have been delayed until Sept. 3. The college football season starts on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Here is the announcement from the league:

“The Sun Belt Conference announced today that it will delay the first permissible date of competition for the 2020-21 academic year to September 3.

“The rescheduling of contests due to these adjustments will be determined by each member institution.

“This delay will allow conference members additional time to implement protocols for a safe return to competition. The Sun Belt Conference and each member institution will continue to lean on the COVID-19 advisory panel, which has worked diligently to establish protocols and guidelines that will ensure the health and well-being of student-athletes, coaches and staff as they return to play.”

This decision leaves the door open for the Sun Belt to return to the gridiron on time and sends a clear message where the priorities are in the Sun Belt — football isn’t getting delayed until the sport absolutely has to be delayed.
