From the moment Devon Gales was seriously injured two years ago playing for Southern against Georgia, the wide receiver has received loads of support.
Gales early in the 2015 season suffered a paralyzing neck injury when he collided with Georgia kicker Marshall Morgan during a kickoff return. After emergency surgery, Gales was move to Atlanta’s Shepherd Center where he recovered. Meanwhile, several Georgia players, coaches and fans have shown support for Gales. Georgia players wore helmet stickers that season in honor of Gales. And he came to Georgia’s spring game this year.
He’s since graduated from Shepherd Center but continues working toward his goal of walking again on his own through the facility’s “Beyond Therapy” program, Atlanta TV station Fox 5 reported. In May, the Baton Rouge, La. native walked for the first time since his injury. His mother said he’s been using a machine that’s similar to having robotic legs, which allows him to walk with assistance.
Since the injury, Gales has also struck up a friendship with Morgan.
As Gales continues his recovery, people can support his need for a handicap-accessible home by texting “Devon” to 706-204-1707.
