Tayven Jackson’s decision to transfer from Tennessee was one Vols fans could have spotted from a mile away.
The Class of 2022 4-star QB committed to Josh Heupel soon after he took the reins of the Tennessee football program. Jackson seemed destined to be the Vols’ QB of the future after Hendon Hooker and Joe Milton departed Knoxville.
A multitude of factors played into Jackson never realizing that dream at Tennessee. Hendon Hooker became a star, Joe Milton became a strong backup and Jackson sat 3rd on the depth chart with 5-star incoming freshman Nico Iamaleava on the docket for 2023.
With that in mind, Jackson saw the writing on the wall and made the decision to transfer to Indiana, the same school at which his brother – star Indiana hoops forward Trayce Jackson-Davis – was playing college basketball.
And there’s no ill will towards Tennessee on Jackson’s end. This past week, via A to Z Sports, Jackson spoke on his experience in Knoxville and the impact the Vols’ coaching staff has had on him.
Here’s what he had to say:
“Coach (Joey) Halzle and Coach Mitch (Militello) are great quarterback coaches, great offensive geniuses,” said Jackson. “And what I learned from them is really just how to approach the game. Just how to approach the game right and know what to take in and what not to take in and how to be a pro. How to study well. How to, you know, block out the outside noise and just try to really understand and grasp what we’re doing. And they taught me that well and I couldn’t thank them enough. They’re great coaches. I still think that quarterback room and the way they coach their kids is the best in the nation. So I hope that they have a great season.”
Jackson appeared briefly in 3 games for Tennessee last season, completing 3 of his 4 passing attempts for 37 yards. He rushed for a touchdown during the Vols’ early-season matchup against Akron.
