Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy practiced in a limited capacity on Friday, marking his first major involvement in training camp for the Vols since tearing his ACL in winter workouts.

According to multiple reports from those in attendance, McCoy took part in several positional drills with the defense. GoVols247 reported that McCoy donned a helmet and shoulder pads and jumped in on several man coverage-based goal line drills. Coaches did not throw his way during any of the drills he took part in, according to reports, and he did not take part in one-on-one drills with receivers.

Rocky Top Insider reported that McCoy was not wearing any kind of brace over his surgically repaired knee and did not have any visible impediment in his movement during the portion of practice that was open to the media.

McCoy suffered the injury back in January. At the outset of fall camp, coach Josh Heupel gave an update on McCoy’s recovery but stopped short of providing a clear timeline for his return.

“No timetable on him,” Heupel said. “There’s benchmark things that he’s got to accomplish within our training room to move on to the next phase of it. He’s handled it really well from the very beginning. Just his mindset and how he’s approached every single day. He’s done a really good job throughout the course of the summer. Periodically, you see his drills, movement, explosive-type drills that he’s doing, change based on his rehab protocol. He’s handled it extremely well.

“As we go through training camp, there will be a progression. How his body responds to some of those things will kind of dictate the time period of when he’s available for us.”

McCoy was one of the best defensive backs in the country last season. He earned All-SEC honors after recording 44 tackles, 9 pass breakups, and 4 interceptions. He was a key force in helping the Vols make their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff.
