Tennessee miraculously avoids a safety as fans, media react to shocking development
By Keith Farner
Published:
Tennessee dodged a major mistake late in the first half when the Vols were inside their own 2-yard line.
Hendon Hooker fumbled in the end zone, and Javontez Spraggins recovered it to lunge toward the goal line. The play received an extensive review and the “SEC on CBS” crew appeared to settle on it being a safety.
However, the officials ruled that the play would stay, and Tennessee later punted from its own end zone, and Georgia scored on a long touchdown pass on the ensuing possession.

Several fans thought it should be a different result:
These are the same refs from the Alabama-Tennessee game btw
Not originally called a safety. These refs are clearly corrupt. pic.twitter.com/LNt0RAEnQ6

This wasn’t ruled a safety on the field, was reviewed, and stood as not a safety, allowing Tennessee to punt instead #TENNvsUGA pic.twitter.com/QlH3KxhWo9

That should have been ruled a safety on the field… Apparently not enough evidence to overturn it.
Tennessee will punt from its own end zone.

The call stands!? Lol. Thats a safety. What did the ref spend all that time looking at!? #Tennessee #Georgia pic.twitter.com/1whXz9Cvdx

After a very, very long review, officials rule it a fourth down for Tennessee and the #Vols will now punt. It may have been a safety, but who knows?
Long story short, Georgia fields the punt inside the Tennessee 40-yard line and has a short field to work with. https://t.co/xXC2JNOSQ1

Refs on the field only people outside of Tennessee who didn’t think that was a safety #TENNvsUGA

That’s an incredible play from Tennessee’s OL to preserve a safety or a touchdown.

Refs are pretty garbage in this Tennessee Georgia game , wow. Like to hear the explanation on that not being a safety
