One of the most iconic traditions in all of North American sports is the legendary pre-game flyover that takes place before most big-time games located in outdoor venues.
Seeing military aircraft rip through the air overhead following the national anthem is enough to get any fan’s blood pumping in anticipation of a football game, especially in an SEC stadium.
Unfortunately for the fans that will be in attendance at Neyland Stadium this weekend, though, there will be no pre-game flyover, as the Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that it has been cancelled due to the ongoing government shutdown.
According to the Sentinel Volunteers insider Mike Wilson, a spokesperson for the university confirmed on Thursday that there will be no flyover before kickoff between No. 12 Tennessee and the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Per Wilson, this will mark the first time this season that there hasn’t been a flyover before a Volunteers home game, and it will also be the first time since November of last year that the tradition has been scrapped, when daylight savings forced the pilots to skip the flight.
Hopefully, the current dispute up in DC can be resolved quickly so that things can go back to normal, not only for college football, but for the rest of the country as well.
