Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker is a story of survival and perseverance
By Dave Hooker
Published:
Hendon Hooker is Tennessee’s starting quarterback. That’s quite an achievement. However, he’s faced more difficult challenges than just rising up on a depth chart. Being a starter is nothing compared to what Hooker has undergone.
Hooker was diagnosed with a heart condition that required surgery in September 2020 when he was at Virginia Tech. Playing football was the least of his family’s concern. They were more concerned about his life. Hooker has since recovered, transferred to Tennessee, and become the top rated quarterback in the SEC
Appropriately so, the SEC Network produced a feature on Hooker’s story:
Hendon Hooker has rejuvenated the @Vol_Football offense.
Not too long ago, @henhook2 had a medical scare that gave him a new appreciation for the game he loves

Hooker now has a firm grip on the starting quarterback job at Tennessee. That wasn’t always the case. Joe Milton started the season for Tennessee before Hooker managed his way into the starting lineup.
Dave Hooker started covering Tennessee in 1998. He hosts an SEC radio show out of Chattanooga and covers the SEC for Saturday Down South.
