A pair of sophomores could hold the key to the Texas A&M offense, and one of them is awfully confident that the 2020 season.
“I feel like we’re going to be the best duo in college football,” Texas A&M RB Ainias Smith said of himself and RB Isaiah Spiller, per Travis L. Brown. “We’re just getting started and we have a lot of tools and assets on the team.”
Smith explained how his position switch came about, too.
“Jimbo approached me about switching positions,” he said. “I was doing wide receiver drills at the beginning of practice and at the end of the day, I was doing running back drills. From that day on I was a running back.”
Smith played in 12 games last season with 3 starts, and earned the team’s Special Teams Newcomer, Special Teams Impact and Specialist Strength Awards.
Spiller similarly played in all 13 games, made 9 starts and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, by the league’s head coaches. Spiller was the team’s leading rusher with 946 yards on 174 carries, and scored 10 touchdowns. He earned the team’s Offensive Top Newcomer award, after that season where he became the fourth freshman all-time to run for 100-plus yards in their first game.
