Texas A&M John Chavis has worked with some very dynamic defensive players over the course of his 37-year coaching career.
This is especially true as it pertains to secondary athletes. During his tenure at Tennessee, he worked with the likes of Dale Carter, Deon Carter, and Eric Berry.
At LSU, he helped to mold Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson, among others.
Considering the talent Chavis has coached in the past, it makes these comments on current Texas A&M safety Justin Evans even more eye-popping:
Chavis: Justin Evans loves to play football. He'll compete. He's a mighty fine player. Might be as good of safety as I've ever coached.

"I'm not sure that he's not as good as any safety we've ever coached." – John Chavis on A&M senior Justin Evans. Lofty praise.

Evans — a former JUCO transfer from Mississippi — is the team’s second-leading tackler (55). He’s got 3.0 tackles-for-loss, one blocked kick, six pass-breakups, and four interceptions.
His leadership in the secondary for the Aggies’ defense is palpable. He’s constantly vocalizing directions from his spot, and is absolutely terrific when attacking pass-catchers and rushers alike.
Evans not only appears to be a lock for all-conference honors, but perhaps an All-America status as well.
