Texas produces historic feats in upset victory at Alabama

Texas is flying high Saturday night with Steve Sarkisian providing a breakthrough moment for the Longhorns.

After Alabama held a 16-13 lead at the end of the third quarter, Texas outscored the Crimson Tide 21-8 in the fourth quarter for the 34-24 win. Quinn Ewers was the big engineer of the upset, completing 24-of-38 passes for 349 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win.

Alabama’s defense struggled to find an answer for that passing attack all game long with Ja’Tavion Sanders leading the way with 5 catches for 114 yards. AD Mitchell came through with a pair of late touchdowns, and Xavier Worthy also shined with 5 catches for 75 yards and a score.

In the process, Texas secured its road victory over an AP Top 3 team in 50+ years. The last time that happened for the Longhorns was in 1969.

While it is one of the highest moments for Texas football in recent memory, it is a bleak night for Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide had not lost a home nonconference game since 2007 to UL Monroe. To put that in perspective, that was Nick Saban’s first season with the program, a team that went 7-6 overall.

The 10-point defeat is also Alabama’s first loss at home by double digits since the 2004 season, a 20-3 loss to South Carolina. That game featured a head coaching matchup of Mike Shula vs. Lou Holtz.
