It’s Red River Rivalry week, and the Texas Longhorns just received some great news. Defensive back Malik Muhammad is trending toward being available to play versus Oklahoma, per CBS Sports.
Muhammad missed last week’s game against the Florida Gators, and the Longhorns missed his presence. Kobe Black, who started in Muhammad’s absence, struggled with the Gators last week and was attacked a lot. Muhammad’s return should help elevate the Longhorns’ defense.
In 4 games this year, Muhammad has 9 total tackles and 2 passes defended.
Some good news for Texas:

With Oklahoma star quarterback John Mateer possibly returning for this game, having Muhammad back for the Longhorns will be huge.
Last week against Florida, Texas struggled to stop the chunk plays. Four receivers on Florida averaged 15+ yards a catch. Dallas Wilson caught 6 receptions for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns, Vernell Brown III caught 3 passes for 72 yards, J.Michael Sturdivant caught 2 passes for 42 yards, and Hayden Hansen caught 2 passes for 30 yards.
Having Muhammad back should help the Longhorns defend the long ball and slow down a high-powered Oklahoma offense.
Kickoff for the Red River Rivalry is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl.
