Texas is able to recruit as well as any team in all of college football, as the Longhorns have 5-star recruits all throughout their roster. In today’s college football, guys can opt out and leave the team in the middle of the season, and that is the case in Austin.
Former 5-star receiver Johntay Cook II is no longer with the Longhorns, according to ESPN college football analyst Pete Thamel.
Texas WR Johntay Cook II is no longer with the program, sources confirmed to ESPN’s @PeteThamel.
Cook caught 8 passes for 137 yards and 2 TDs this season. He was the No. 26 overall recruit in the 2023 ESPN 300. @InsideTexas had it first.

The sophomore started the year off on the right track, as he had 3 catches for 56 yards against Colorado State. The following week, he had 3 catches for 35 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, he hasn’t had a catch since a win against Mississippi State on September 28.
His 8 catches on the season ranks 9th on the team, and he also had 8 catches in his freshman campaign.
Cook figures to be a big-time prospect in the transfer portal, as he was the No. 29 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite just 2 years ago. Alongside Arch Manning, Cook was 1 of the Longhorns’ top recruits in a class that was the No. 3 class in the country according to 247Sports.
Texas will be in action this weekend at home against the Florida Gators. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for noon ET and the game will be on ABC.
